Dear Members,
You may have noticed the golf course taking on a different colour palette recently, with areas appearing dry or even lifeless. Rest assured, this is a completely natural process—our couch grass has entered its dormancy phase for the colder months.
What is Dormancy?
Dormancy is a period of reduced growth that occurs in response to unfavourable conditions, such as lower temperatures and reduced sunlight. During this time, the grass conserves energy and resources, primarily within its root system, ensuring its survival through winter.
Why Does Couch Grass Go Dormant?
Our course features Legend and Santa Ana Couch, both warm-season grasses that thrive in warmer climates. When soil temperatures consistently drop below 14°C, their growth slows significantly. Additionally, couch grass requires ample sunlight for photosynthesis—without sufficient light, it enters dormancy to preserve energy until conditions improve.
Dormancy is a protective mechanism that helps the grass withstand freezing temperatures and frosts, allowing it to recover fully when the weather warms.
When Will the Grass Regain Its Colour?
Once soil temperatures consistently rise above 14°C, the couch grass will begin growing again, restoring its lush green colour.
We appreciate your understanding during this seasonal transition and look forward to seeing the course return to its vibrant best in the months ahead.
Kind Regards,
James Veitch
